Do Aliens Exist? (The Big Question 51)

Do aliens exist?

As a child, I was convinced that aliens existed. I was right into UFO’s and that kind of thing. I kept a scrapbook in which I glued articles from newspapers and magazines of supposed alien sightings.

The issue of aliens in the Bible is an interesting one.

On the one hand, there are some passages that people have looked at and said, “There you go! That’s a verse that is clearly talking about aliens.” But I’m not so sure.

Here’s one that’s often brought up. It’s a vision that the prophet Ezekiel had of the throne of God. Let me read it to you:

And when I looked, there were four wheels by the cherubim, one wheel by one cherub and another wheel by each other cherub; the wheels appeared to have the color of a beryl stone. 10 As for their appearance, all four looked alike—as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel (Ezek 10:9-10, NKJV).

But I don’t see a description of a UFO here. Instead I see a poetic image of how God moves around to quickly be there and care for his people wherever they may be in trouble.

However, I think there are other parts of the Bible that may more clearly refer to aliens. Although, by “aliens”, we’re not really talking about little green men and women. Instead, we’re talking about beings who live on other worlds in other parts of the universe.

At the beginning of the book of Colossians, its referring to Jesus and it says that,

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities (Col 1:16, NIV).

So it seems to me that Jesus created much more than just this planet.

Right at the beginning of the book of Hebrews it also says that God,

has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds (Heb 1:2, NKJV).

The word “worlds” is clearly in the plural. Again, it seems to me that this planet is not the only “world” that God created.

My own view is that God, how the Bible describes him, is quintessentially a Creator God. He’s always been creating, and I’m not just talking about the Genesis creation here.

God’s always been creating, because that’s what great artists do – and my God is the greatest artist of all.

So if you ask me if there’s aliens out there, I’d say yes – probably lots of them. Beautiful beings who worship God.

Will we make contact with them? Yes, one day when God has finished fixing up this planet and redeemed humanity has been fully restored back to what we were intended to be.

Until then, I kind of think, God has this messed-up little planet in quarantine.

That’s what I think… So what do you reckon?
