Unlimited: Hosanna!

Unlimited: Hosanna!

When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead, and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve (Mark 11:7–11, NIV).

Around 550 years earlier, the prophet Zechariah had prophesied:

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Finally, Jesus entered Jerusalem! And he certainly made quite an entrance! It’s the kind of entrance that the disciples were hoping for: an entrance fit for a king. Here is how the Gospel of Mark describes it.

By entering Jerusalem in this way, Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, and he fulfilled the people’s expectation of how the Messiah would enter Jerusalem to claim his throne. And so, the people acclaimed him as Messiah and King.

When the people shouted “hosanna,” they were saying, “Hooray for salvation! It’s here! Salvation has come!”

The disciples must have been thrilled to see the people welcome and rejoice in Jesus as the Messiah King. Surely now their luck had turned and wealth and fame were just around the corner!

You see, we are coming to the climax of Marks’s story about Jesus.

Although this is a happy, joyful scene of celebration, here is the irony: those same people who sing “Hosanna” to Christ will be the same people who will shout, “Crucify him” in a few days’ time.

Why is it that we humans change so quickly in how we feel about things?

Go on loving Him. Go on trusting Him. I cannot not love Him. I cannot not not trust Him. It is the one thing that in my life is (thankfully) impossible.
