Unlimited: Let God Be True

Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge” (Romans 3:4(b).)

This verse tells us that there is a real sense in which God himself will be judged. You may not understand how God has led you throughout your life, or what he has permitted to occur to you, but in the end, he will be proven right.

As a learned pharisee, Paul frequently quoted the Old Testament Scriptures. Here he is quoting Psalms 51:4:

Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.

Let God be true in your own life.

The context here is David’s great sin of adultery and murder. The point statement in his great prayer of repentance is to affirm that he is the one who is guilty, and that God is right in judging him as a sinner. This is exactly the apostle Paul’s point in Romans: that the whole world is under the condemnation of sin and is under the righteous judgment of God and without excuse.

The vindication of God’s acts in the judgment is one of the themes of Scripture. In the book of Revelation, at the end of all things, the apostle John hears the great multitude in heaven shouting,

…“Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
for true and just are his judgments
(Rev 19:1–2).

Spiritual Application

Let God be true in your own life. Are you willing to really do that? Then submit your opinions, views, preferences, relationships and politics to him in the light of His Word and the Gospel.
