Zorro Almost Rides Again

Zorro almost rides again

I never thought I’d see the day, but yes, there was a time when I could say, “Zorro almost rides again!”

Zorro is an old character from an old Disney black and white series from the 1950’s, later made into several more recent movies. When I was a little kid, I used to like to come home after school and watch TV for a bit, and I used to enjoy the series.

When I was in my final year of high school, I went on a school camp. As luck would have it, it rained, we got wet, and we ended up having to sleep on the floor in a nearby hall.

Zorro rides again!

I liked a bit of a prank, and I thought I would pull off a good one that night. A year or so before I had been in another camp in which we had woken up in our tents, with “Z’s” marked on our foreheads and faces. We had obviously been marked by Zorro in our sleep! And so, I decided to do the same.

I woke up in the middle of the night, found a permanent marker in my bag, and started creeping around putting “Z’s” on the faces of dozens of my classmate’s faces. It took me ages because whenever someone stirred, I would slink back into the shadows. I didn’t dare use my torch, because the last thing I wanted was to wake anyone up!

It’s important to be able to see what you are doing in life

When I had finished, I crept back into my sleeping bag, satisfied in a well-executed prank. I couldn’t wait to see the reaction of my classmates when they woke up in the morning and tried to work out what had happened.

In the morning, I woke up with everyone else. I was so excited to know that because of me, Zorro rides again!

But there was no commotion. There was nothing unusual. I looked around. There were no “Z’s” on anyone’s faces! Instead of my classmates, it was I who was confused and puzzled.

Then I went to check my permanent marker, and I discovered that it was dry. I had spent a good part of the night creeping around achieving nothing! You can imagine how I felt, as I wandered around bleary-eyed from not having slept much. Instead of “Zorro rides again”, it was more like “Zorro stuffs up big time!”

It’s important to be able to see what you are doing in life.

It was more like “Zorro stuffs up big time!”

The Bible tells us that,

darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples (Isa. 60:2.)

This refers firstly to the sin and evil in the world, and also to the reality that mostly, we don’t really know what we are doing with our lives.

Jesus said,

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12.)

Without Jesus in your life, you’re going to be like me in the middle of the night, stumbling around in the dark, and accomplishing nothing.

We all want to leave our mark on the world, don’t we? We want to leave a legacy, something significant so that we won’t be forgotten in the years to come.

You don’t want to realise, at the end of your life, that you haven’t achieved anything

Most people, when they leave this world, will have been loved and appreciated by others. And that’s a wonderful thing. However, what if you could leave a mark in the world that will be more than just a genealogical record in someone’s family tree? What if you could leave an eternal mark, an eternal legacy?

At the end of your life, you don’t want to realise that you achieved nothing of eternal value.

We make financial plans and fitness plans and self-development plans, and all kinds of other plans for our lives. All these kinds of plans are made in an attempt to have some control over our future, precisely because we are largely in the dark. While all these plans may be important, they aren’t the most important thing. None of these things will have an eternal impact.

How can we make a start to making sure that we’re not stumbling around in our lives? How can we learn to see in this world so we can truly know what we are doing? The Bible also says,

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Ps. 119:105.)

Opening your Bible is a great place to make a start on the rest of your life.
