“ …And the king said, ‘this disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?’ Elisha said, ‘Hear the word of the Lord’” (2 Kings 6:33).
The famine resulting from Samaria’s besiegement by the Arameans was so severe that Israel’s king had decided that the God must be behind it, and therefore there was no point in looking to God for help and guidance any longer. How thoroughly human! How typical of the rest of us! When circumstances are dire; when things are not as I would like them to be, God is seen as not merely useless, but an enemy. It is a condition in which I often find myself, and one in which there can be only one prudent answer: “Hear the word of the Lord.”
