The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp and entered one of the tents. They ate and drank and carried away silver, gold and clothes” (2 Kings 7:8).

Now and then this saying gets an airing: ‘It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person, or a more deserving one.’  It happens when someone wins a lottery prize or meets with some circumstance considered by folk to be good fortune.  When the four lepers plundered the tents of the Arameans who had fled, no one would said, It couldn’t have happened to anyone more deserving. Lepers were not considered deserving of anything good.  Good will and human sympathy did not flow their way.  But here, they are the ones upon whom fortune smiles. While others ‘more deserving’ languish, they eat, drink and are rich.  Such is the great reversal found throughout Scripture. God is on the side of those with no thing and no hope.
