Hebrews 2:10–11 (ESV)

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers.

Yesterday, we saw Jesus as the true and better man, crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death in our place. Now verse 10 shows us why that matters: he is the founder of our salvation.

That word “founder” means he is the pioneer, the one who goes ahead, the one who blazes the trail. He is the author of salvation, the one who planned it, achieved it, and now applies it.

And how did he do it? “Perfect through suffering.” That doesn’t mean he was imperfect before. Back in chapter 1, Jesus is already described as the radiance of God’s glory, the exact imprint of his nature. He is sinless and holy. But through suffering — through his death on the cross — he perfectly completed the work of salvation. He became the perfect Saviour by doing what was necessary to bring us to glory.

And notice the relational language: “bringing many sons to glory.” This isn’t just about individuals saved in isolation. Jesus is forming a family. Verse 11 says, “He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers [and sisters].”

That’s remarkable. Think about it: Jesus knows all our failures, all our shame, all our rebellion — and yet he is not ashamed of us. Where others may reject us, where we may even feel ashamed of ourselves, Jesus calls us family. He is proud to stand with us. He is glad to bring us to glory.

This is why we can take our shame to him. Jesus has already carried it. And now he welcomes us into God’s family. If you belong to him, you are no longer on the outside. You are part of his people. You are his brother, his sister.

Reflection

Jesus is the founder of your salvation. Through his suffering, he brought you into God’s family. And he is not ashamed to call you his own.
