[1] Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, [2] a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. (ESV)

We Have Such A High Priest
Remember the context of this book. The original readers were wavering in their faith. They were Jewish people who came to understand that Jesus is the Messiah and that they should follow him. However, as their Christian life becomes difficult and persecution increases, they are tempted to return to the old ways.
Verse 1 is a helpful summary statement of all that has gone before and a key message for them to hold onto. “Now the point in what we are saying is this…” When you see a statement like that in scripture, it is the author underlining something he wants to make sure his readers don’t miss.
What’s his point?
“We have such a high priest…”
He doesn’t say: “We hope for a high priest” or “We are waiting on a high priest”.
He says: We have such a high priest.
Present tense. Right now.
So, to these Jewish Christians with wavering faith, he declares: You already have everything you need in Jesus.
The same is true for us. When anxiety creeps in, when guilt weighs heavily – we have a high priest. Not a distant memory. A living, reigning, interceding Saviour.
Seated, Not Standing
Notice where he is: seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven (verse 1).
In the Old Testament, priests never sat down while serving. They stood, offering sacrifice after sacrifice, because there was always more work to be done.
But Jesus sat down.
Why? Because the work of redemption is complete. On the cross, he cried out, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Everything necessary for our salvation – done. Everything required to deal with our sin – dealt with.
When the task is complete, you sit down. And Jesus sat down at the right hand of God – the place of supreme honour, authority, rule, and power.
Still Working
While Jesus is seated, he is not idle.
Verse 2 describes him as “a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.”
Jesus is actively ministering. Right now. He’s interceding for his people (Hebrews 7:25). He’s representing us before the Father, applying the fruit of his once and for all sacrifice to those who trust in him.
When you wake up anxious, Jesus is interceding. When you’re overwhelmed by temptation, Jesus is interceding. When you feel distant from God, Jesus is interceding. He never stops.
The True Tent
And where is he doing this? Not in an earthly tabernacle that will crumble. He ministers in “the true tent that the Lord set up” – the heavenly sanctuary, the real thing.
The earthly tabernacle built by Moses was good, but it was only ever a shadow – Jesus ministers in the actual presence of God.
The Good News Is…
Jesus has opened the way into that presence for you. Through his sacrifice, the curtain was torn. Through his ascension, he entered the heavenly sanctuary as your forerunner. And through his ongoing ministry, he keeps you secure in God’s love.
You are not on your own. You have a great high priest seated at God’s right hand, actively working on your behalf.
You can approach God with confidence, not because of your performance, but because of Jesus’ perfect work. When you fail, you don’t have to spiral into shame. Your high priest is interceding. When life feels overwhelming, when you wonder if God has forgotten you – he hasn’t. Jesus is at the Father’s right hand, holding you fast.
Reflection
Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus’ finished work at the cross, and thank you that he is now seated at your right hand interceding for me. Help me rest in his completed sacrifice and trust in his ongoing ministry. Amen.
