Verse of the Day 2 Corinthians 12 10 with Dave Miers

2 Corinthians 12:10

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (ESV)

Is it possible to be content when life goes pear-shaped?

Weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, calamities. Content?!? Are you kidding me? My default in those moments is discontentment, discouragement, and maybe even despair.

How is Paul able to say that he is content? Because of Jesus. Notice the opening phrase “For the sake of Christ, then”. Knowing Jesus changes everything.

Just before this, Paul had mentioned a thorn in his flesh. We’re not quite sure what that thorn was, but whatever it was, it actually helped to keep him from becoming conceited, which means puffed up and proud.

That didn’t stop him from pleading three times for the Lord to remove this thorn. But remember what Jesus said to Paul in the verse before this (2 Corinthians 12:9)?

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Then Paul said,

Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

The good news is that when Paul is weak, he is strong, because Christ’s power rests on him. And the same is true for us.

When life goes pear-shaped, we have the opportunity to discover that Jesus is strong enough, kind enough, and he will keep us.
