The Word Does Its Work — 1 Thessalonians 2:13–16

The gospel isn’t just a message you hear. It’s a word that goes to work in you.
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last! — 1 Thessalonians 2:13–16 (ESV)
Not the Word of Men, But the Word of God
The Thessalonians didn’t receive Paul’s preaching as one more human opinion. They accepted it as what it really is, the word of God, at work in you believers. We heard this back in chapter one too, remember? Their faith went viral because the word wasn’t just information; it was doing something.
The primary way that God works through his people is through his word. The word of God is not some ancient ink on a page. It gets into people and changes them.
Bold No Matter the Cost
The word at work in their life comes at a cost. The Thessalonians suffered for this word, just like the churches in Judea did before them. One of the things I’m struck by in Scripture, and see again and again in my own work supporting persecuted Christians, is that the gospel has always spread in the context of persecution. It’s not a modern anomaly. It’s the pattern.
Paul doesn’t shrink back from that. He proclaims the word courageously, boldly, no matter the cost. And that’s the call for us too. We may not all deliver sermons about the Bible, but we make the most of the moments God gives us, in the middle of ordinary relationships, to say something of who Jesus is and why he’s worth knowing.
The Good News Is…
The good news is that this word of Jesus is actually good news, which is why it’s worth making known whatever it costs! It’s the news that Jesus Christ is Lord, and he delivers us from the wrath and judgment we deserve for our sin and idolatry because he already took it upon himself at the cross.
It’s definitely not a message worth keeping to ourselves. As others hear this word, we pray that they too will receive the salvation the Risen Christ continues to offer to all who trust in him.
