Who is Jesus? When he said “Before Abraham was, I am,” he wasn’t leaving the sentence unfinished — he was claiming the name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Yahweh. The great I AM. The Jewish leaders understood exactly what he meant, which is why they picked up stones.
This is a claim that won’t let us settle for “good teacher” or “wise prophet.” Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic, or the eternal LORD God who entered his own creation to set us free from slavery to sin. There’s no neutral ground.
Kicking off our eight-part series on the I AM statements of Jesus, we trace the Old Testament thread that runs through John 8 and consider what it means to meet a God who not only made the claim but backed it up — going to the cross in humility and rising again in power.
