God’s Word Advances — Acts 12:20–25
Oct 30, 2026 13
Herod’s voice roars and the church trembles. But Herod doesn’t get the last word. God’s word advances, even when earthly rulers seem to have all the power.
Acts 12:21–23
[21] On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. [22] And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” [23] Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. (ESV)

People from Tyre and Sidon had asked Herod for peace because their region depended on the king’s country for food (Acts 12:20). Herod takes the opportunity to address them, dressed in his royal robes and seated on his throne (Acts 12:21). When the people call him a god, he accepts their praise rather than giving glory to God (Acts 12:22–23).
Herod had power, soldiers, and a public voice. But he could not stand against God. His reign ends abruptly; his voice is silenced.
At the start of this chapter, James is dead, Peter is in prison, and Herod seems to be in control (Acts 12:2, 4). Now Peter is free, Herod is humiliated, and God’s word advances. Luke gives us the final contrast:
Acts 12:24
[24] But the word of God increased and multiplied. (ESV)
The church has faced death and imprisonment, but the gospel keeps spreading. The chapter ends with Barnabas and Saul returning from Jerusalem and bringing John Mark with them (Acts 12:25). Herod’s reign ends, but God’s mission continues.

The Good News is…
Herod’s voice was silenced, but Jesus is alive and reigning. Through his death for sinners and his resurrection, he has won, and he will win. We may be killed, imprisoned, or ridiculed, but no earthly ruler can stop his word from spreading. Stay with Jesus, and keep giving yourself to his mission.
Like and share so others can see Jesus clearly.

Reflection
Where are you tempted to trust earthly power or approval? Ask God to help you stay with Jesus, who has won and will win.
