Jesus Is the Hero of the Story — Acts 13:26–37
Nov 4, 2026 9
Paul has brought his listeners from Israel’s story to Jesus. But what makes Jesus the hero of the story?
Acts 13:28–33
[28] And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. [29] And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. [30] But God raised him from the dead, [31] and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. [32] And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, [33] this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’ (ESV)

Jerusalem’s rulers failed to recognise Jesus, but in condemning him they fulfilled the prophets (Acts 13:27). Though innocent, Jesus was handed over to death on a tree. This was the greatest injustice, and the greatest moment of mercy. Jesus was without sin, yet he bore the curse of sin for all who rebel against God (Acts 13:28–29).
But God raised Jesus from the dead. Death could not hold him down. The disciples saw him alive and became his witnesses (Acts 13:30–31). Paul says this is the good news: God has fulfilled his promises by raising Jesus (Acts 13:32–33).
Paul points to three Old Testament passages. God had promised that his Son would reign, that the blessings promised to David would endure, and that his Holy One would not see decay (Psalm 2:7; Isaiah 55:3; Psalm 16:10). Jesus’ resurrection was not an unexpected turn in the story. It was the fulfilment of God’s promises.
Paul then contrasts David with Jesus. David served God in his generation, but he died and his body decayed. Jesus, whom God raised, did not see decay (Acts 13:36–37). David was an important king, but he was not the hero of the story. Jesus is the hero because he is alive.

The Good News is…
Jesus is more than a figure from ancient history. He is alive, and we can know him personally, not just know things about him. If you have questions about Christianity, bring them. But take the central claim seriously: Jesus died, and God raised him from the dead. This is the good news Paul proclaimed.
Like and share so others can see Jesus clearly.

Reflection
What questions do you still have about Jesus’ death and resurrection? Take time to investigate the claim that he is alive.
