I learnt this week that in the original Hebrew there are exactly twenty six words before and after, “Thou art with me” of Psalm 23. It seems that the message – God with us is not only the centrepiece of Psalm 23 but of the whole Bible. Psalmist David not only presents a God out there, but a God he can talk to “thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Psalm 23 touches us with some of the most heart-warming, and the most comforting words ever composed. Its sentiments have been put to music, the poetry recited on multitude of stages world over, and scores of books and commentaries written about it.
The very first couple of words “The Lord is…” reveal the ultimate statement of truth that there is a God, a tender, caring God – a shepherd God whose flock is satisfied in every way. The Lord is…the names by which God reveals Himself in the Bible are many – the creator and the king of the vast universe, redeemer, friend, guardian, caring shepherd, etc. But the ultimate question is not what God is, rather it is much more close and personal. The very next word is ‘my’. This two-letter personal pronoun suddenly brings the God of the universe right down into my personal space. The Creator- God, can and wants to be my God my carer, my provider? To know that there is a God can be purely information unless I can call Him my God. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” How glorious! This God became Flesh and walked and talked amongst us, and now in flesh identifies Himself as the Shepherd once again. Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd…” Jn. 10:14
“Thou art with me.” Beyond coincidence, under inspiration, the poet David boldly declares that in the presence of God and with God’s presence in my life “I shall lack nothing.” Does God exceed anything and everything else that I may desire? A BIG God is making outlandishly big statements needing some big answers on my part.
