The Law of Change – by Desmond Ford

SunsetThe very first day on earth saw a gentle sunrise, increasing warmth, decreasing heat, the decline of the sun, the cool of the evening and then the darkness of the night. I don’t know what Adam said to Eve when they saw the sun go down; perhaps, “I wonder whether we will ever see that again?”

But this much is certain. They were being taught the law of change. From the gentle warmth of sunrise, the heat of noonday, the decline of the day, the evening and then night! Change. All things change except the law of change.

A very wise king was asked to take over a throne, so a fable goes, and so he called in all his wise men and said, “I want you to give me in just a few words something can be put on a ring that I can wear, a philosophy of life that will help me survive the challenges of being king.” So all the wise men got together and, ultimately they came up with something. They said to the king, “This is what you are to put on the ring, ‘This too shall pass away.'”

Whether it is some ecstatic pleasure that is now mine or whether it is an awful agony that is now mine, none of them last. This, too, shall pass away. Unless somehow I have a part in that which is eternal, I’m an idiot because whatever I it is that I an holding on to – this, too, shall pass away. You and I, we will pass away.

That is why this New Testament verse is so important,

He that believeth is not condemned; he that believeth not is condemned already. He that believeth has ever- lasting life; he that believeth not shall not see life but the wrath of God abides on him. – John 3:18

Either grace abides on you and me, or the wrath of God. And it does not depend on our track record because none of our track records are that marvellous. It depends on whether we have opened our hearts to the grace of God – whether we have been humble enough to take the gift.
