jesus-preachingConstantly drawing attention to oneself is generally thought to be egocentric, self-absorbed, perhaps vainglorious and conceited. Have you ever thought about how it is that Jesus was able to constantly draw attention to himself and yet was the most humble and the least self-absorbed person who ever lived?

Perhaps one of the most singular features of Jesus’ ministry was that He did not shy away from making claims about himself that in the mouths of any other would have been seen as unbefitting, incongruous and improper.

Jesus taught with a simple “I say unto you.” There is nothing egocentric about God on a mission of redemption. The whole universe was watching and Jesus was on centre stage taking your place and mine.

Jesus claimed equality with God. This staggering claim got him into a lot of trouble with religious authorities who believed this was blasphemy of the highest order.

The most important message Jesus proclaimed was that God was in their midst and it was He who walked and lived among them. The Saviour of the world, the long ago foretold Messiah – He was the one. Jesus pointed to Himself as the Truth, The Way and The Bread of Life –

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:6

There were and are many great leaders and teachers who point the way to truth, but what sets Jesus apart is that He said ‘Come to me,’ ‘Follow me.’ He taught with authority, wisdom and power. Jesus claimed jurisdiction over time, space, matter, nature, disease and even death. Only God could do this.

We as Christians believe Jesus was truly God, God who became one of us to redeem the world. Like the disciples of Christ we too have only one question to answer: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.… John 6:68, 69.
