“Jesus said, ‘I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’” (John 16:33).
We live in two kingdoms at the same time: the kingdom of this world and the kingdom of heaven. In the kingdom of this world we “will have trouble.” This was true for Jesus. He was called a ‘man of sorrows and acquainted with grief’ in the prophecies. No person has suffered as he suffered and the experience of God’s followers right through history has demonstrated the truth of these words.
That is assured. But in Christ’s kingdom we “have peace.” That also is assured. This means that while experiencing “trouble” in this world, we may experience Christ’s “peace” at the same time. Not only does Jesus reassure, he reminds us that we have reason to be happy and joyful. Our sins are forgiven, and the love of God has flooded our lives. Eternity is assured.
What is your “trouble”? Whatever it is, never doubt the ultimate outcome because Jesus has overcome it. He is your “peace”. Hold fast to him.
