Right is Might

I won a trivia competition at school once. The prize that had been announced for the winner was a music CD. I won that competition in front of the whole school, but they never gave me the CD. To this day I don’t know why.

But that’s just trivial! The unfairness of life goes much deeper than that. I’m sure that you’ve experienced it. It seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

When I was in business, I had a manager once who taught me the “Golden Rule”:

“He who has the gold makes the rules.”

That the reverse of what Jesus taught, but that’s the way the world works. Whether it’s economics, politics, or society, if you have the money you determine the outcome. Everything is for sale. Everything can be bought.

Our society works on the principle that “might is right.” Too often in the end, it seems like it’s the powerful, the wealthy, and the most aggressive who get what they want.

It’s always been like that, even back in Bible times. That’s why, throughout the Old Testament, the prophets cry out for justice for the widow, the orphan, and the refugee in your land. “Might is right” was a principle that had never been really… until the Cross event.

The crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ was apparently the ultimate demonstration of “might is right.” The greatest injustice ever perpetuated was perpetuated against Jesus. The spotless Lamb of God, the embodiment of innocence and goodness, was condemned to death by both the highest religious and civil courts in the land. The might of Rome apparently crushed him. Ultimate right was set against the highest might of this world: good versus evil.

It seemed that the old adage had been proven true once again, that might really is right…. That was until the resurrection morning.

When that tomb burst open and Jesus walked out alive again, a new age dawned for this world. The old order of things was reversed, for this age was to be governed by a new principle: that “right is might.”

Jesus has demonstrated once and for all that ultimately right will win over might.

It’s true that we don’t see that applied in the world around us by those who reject the victory of Jesus on that resurrection day. And it’s true that you and I suffer the results today. But there is a greater truth. The greater truth is that Jesus has demonstrated once and for all that ultimately right will win over might.

That’s what keeps us going. That’s what energises us. That’s what gets us through the unfairness and injustices of life, both the little annoyances and the larger ones, like the suffering of the innocent, and the death of those we love.

And meanwhile, we work to make peace, to show mercy, and to bring justice to the oppressed and the forgotten of this world. We do it because Jesus has demonstrated what will soon be. We do it because it is the rule that applies in this new age of the Kingdom of God. We do it because we the citizens of that new Kingdom where Christ is king.
