I read a really sad and surprising news report on a website this morning. It said that the most likely demographic to commit suicide in Australian society are not the young people, but men over 85 years of age.
I find that really sad. We can speculate about why that might be. Maybe they think they’re a burden on society. Maybe they think that they have nothing else to offer.
There’s another old fellow in the Bible that we read about in the Bible in Romans chapter 4. His name was Abraham. It says there that he was around 100 years old. He was so old that the Bible says that he counted his body as good as dead (Romans 4:19).
But what he didn’t know was that his best days were ahead of him. That’s true for all who believe and trust in Jesus Christ.
It says there in Romans that because of his trust, his faith in God, Abraham inherited the whole world (Romans 4:13). He inherited the world in two ways. He inherited eternity, as in “the meek shall inherit the earth” but also, today in a very way in terms of the legacy that he left. Today, a large part of the world’s population counts Abraham as their spiritual father: the followers of Islam, the Jewish faith, and Christianity.
How is it that Abraham got to achieve so much, although he seemingly had so few possibilities in the flesh? Romans chapter four tells us how. That is because he believed in God, and he was justified, he was made righteous through his faith in God.
As a believer in Jesus, your best days are always ahead of you.
Simply because we’re human, we’ll often come to a point in our lives when we feel that we can’t go on, that it’s just too hard. We can feel like there’s no point, and that you’re totally useless. Sometimes, it feels like it’s just too hard.
I’m speaking for myself. I know what it feels like to be strangled financially, to be unable to find work, and even to try to overcome a life of being told that you’re no good. I know what it’s like to have to come face to face with my own weakness and sin. But we have a God who “gives life to the dead and who calls into being things that were not” (Rom 4:17). Whatever may be lacking in your life, God can call into being. Because he is the one who gives life to the dead.
When you feel like you’ve hit your dead end, remember the story of Abraham. As a believer in Jesus, your best days are always ahead of you. Like Abraham, the fulfilment of all of God’s promises are just around the corner, and you’re about to inherit the world! The blessings are for those who keep on believing in Jesus – those who have been made righteous through faith.

When life is spent there are still things to do. If we live in Christ, we are living unselfishly for others. What God has revealed to us now and over the years are valuable input for and older person to share with he younger people coming up. You never know what a difference you can make in a young person's future. Especially their eternal future.
