Accentuate the Positive

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

Who will win the battle between evil and good? It depends on who your Master is. If Jesus lives in you, and if you give him full control of your life, you will always be the victor. On other other hand, if Satan has crowded your life with addictions and negativity, you will always be overcome by evil.

Some years ago I experienced a severe bought of depression. At that time everything appeared to be black and without hope. One day, while exercising in the local park, it came to me that I could choose what I thought about. I could let negative thoughts rule my life, or I could replace them with good thoughts. So each day I would make a mental list of good things that I could thank God for. I soon discovered such a list is limitless. When I was tempted to be negative I would replace that with something good, which is what the apostle Paul, in Philippians 4:6-88, commands us to do. He says there, “Do not be anxious about anything, but… whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

The light of good is far more powerful than blackness of evil. When you open the shutters at night darkness doesn’t come flooding into your home; rather, light floods out banishing the darkness. There is a tremendous power in good to banish the darkness so practice overcoming evil with good.
