A Beacon for Your Life

After a very hot day yesterday I was chilling out on my balcony in the evening, gazing at the black sky. Heavy raindrops began to fall and that distinctive smell of freshly dampened soil rose into the air. In a short time the rain became much heavier and persisted throughout the night.

plane landing at nightAs I watched the northern sky I saw a pinprick of light. When it grew closer it became two tiny yellow lights, pulsating on the wings of an incoming plane. When it was within about ten kilometres the bright landing lights were turned on. That shaft of light pierced the rain but it was not a means of finding a path to the tarmac. The plane was locked on to a radar beacon on top of the hospital three kilometres to my right. Then it would continue to drop in altitude and swing into line with another radar beacon at Sydney airport.

As the plane roared past my balcony I noticed another set of wing tip lights in the middle distance. And off in the far distance a lesser speck of moving light. These giants of the sky were lining up in a queue, all fixing their radar onto the same device on top of the hospital. I watched as more than a dozen flew safely through the pouring rain and poor visibility. They no doubt landed without calamity on the airport’s welcome mat.

My musing on the balcony turned to the planes fixation on radar beacons. Could my life have a reliable radar beacon? It led me to think of Hebrews 12:2,3:

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,

the author and perfecter of our faith,

who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,

scorning its shame,

and sat down at the right hand of God.

Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men,

so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
