So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot lived.
Genesis 19:29

Even the most cursory reading of the chapter leaves us wondering why God bothered to retrieve Lot; he wasn’t much of a person. See how he offered up his daughters!  This is just a single example of a recurring theme in Scripture: God saves the unlikeliest people.  Clearly, it can’t be on account of their virtue; there must be another reason. There is, and the text gives us a clue. God remembered—not Lot, but Abraham—and saved Lot.  Was it Abraham’s personal qualities that counted? No. God remembered his promise to Abraham. God was true to his word.  Good news, that God can be merciful to me and still be true to himself!
