“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him… Just as I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me” (John 6:56-57).

When you read a great story, you picture it, think about it, remember various parts of it: you ‘live’ the story alongside the hero or heroine of the story. It is the same with Jesus. If he is just a character in a book we haven’t read, he will remain out of reach. But as we absorb the great story of the gospel, we are led to accept the salvation that is offered to us. In using the image of a meal – eating Jesus’ flesh and drinking his blood – John’s Gospel was telling us that every part of our lives can be absorbed in our close relationship with Jesus.

So what do we need to do to feed on Jesus? We feed on him when we absorb his teachings and his saving ministry from the Gospels. The importance of reading from the Gospels every day cannot be emphasised too much. It is our daily bread. When Christ comes into our life, though his word, he brings eternal life with him.

The other lesson that Jesus gave his listeners in these words was that he also relied on God for spiritual sustenance, and we need to follow his example. To remain in Christ is the only safe place to be.
