“God is present in the company of the righteous” (Psalm 14:5).
When an individual is eulogised at his funeral ceremony for his integrity, his service to the community, and his being an all-round decent person, the eulogist comes close to meaning what the Old Testament writer conveys by the word ‘righteous.’ It never means ethical perfection. Only in reference to God does the term denote a moral absolute. Two ideas are indicated by today’s text: First, God chooses to dwell among humans. Second, God is encountered, acknowledged, known and loved—as he is present in the lives of the ‘relatively’ righteous.
