“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with Joy” (Psalm 30:11).

For the last few weeks news bulletins have been dominated by images and sounds of unimaginable human grief. Today’s Scripture looks for all the world like the little shepherd with his sling, standing before a goliath of pain and despair.  Is the author taunting us?  Should faith risk saying things like this in the kind of world we are in?  Yes, it does seem blinkered and ridiculous. Yet, across history’s millenniums, there have always been those who have discovered such a powerful secret, that they have been able to dance; able to know joy, even amid sorrow and loss.
