Gospel Freedom Frees Us From Sin and Death – Today and Forever!
Gospel freedom is real! The Gospel is the greatest freeing power in the world.
The Bible continually refers to the world without the Gospel as being in slavery to sin. Sin and death rule in our lives, in our communities, and in our world.
The Gospel tells us that we are loved, accepted by God and that we have the assurance of salvation. When you know that you are going to live forever, you can face anything! You know that ultimately, nothing can hold you down, not even death!
The gospel of freedom is the good news that God, in Christ, chose to sacrifice himself on the cross to forgive our sins. Jesus has paid our debts in full! Jesus has freed us from death! He gives eternal life to whoever accepts him as their Lord and Saviour. Jesus said:
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:36)
I find it exciting every year when perennial flowers emerge from their wintery tombs and come back to life in the spring. How do they do it? They have deep roots that stay alive, though dormant underground.
If we root ourselves in Christ Jesus who was raised from the grave, then we can have eternal life too. God is the giver of life, so we must connect with the source of life through his Son Jesus. The Gospel of Jesus frees us from our wintery tombs so we may have eternal life in him. That’s ultimate Gospel freedom!
The Gospel tells us that when we believe in him, we have eternal life. To believe in him simply means to trust him.
Many people are prisoners of their past. God can free you from the past!
How does the Gospel give us freedom from our past?
Jesus forgives us extravagantly if we ask him to. If we can really accept, and understand the immense sacrifice Jesus made to forgive us, it can overflow into forgiving others. Forgiving others frees our hearts from resentment, which helps us to heal. Gospel freedom frees you from the inside out.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus had his last supper before he choose to sacrifice himself on the cross to forgive the sins of the world.
Jesus said:
Take and; eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matt. 26:26-29.)
We can partake of a living banquet. We can eat and drink God’s forgiveness! There is enough forgiveness for all who believe. We can throw away the rotten meal of our past sins. We can clear the table for the Lord to place a banquet of eternal life in our hearts.
Importantly, the Gospel frees us from ourselves. We are our own worst enemies. It comes naturally to human beings to think that our value comes from our performance and that we can be accepted by God depending on how good our behaviour is. The Gospel tells us that we are all sinners because sin is deep within our very natures.
There is nothing we can do to save ourselves. Despite this, God already loves us. He always has. There is nothing we can do to make him love us less and there is nothing we can do to make him love us more.
He loves us because he just loves! That’s who he is. That’s what Jesus came to show us. When we understand that, then we are truly free. We are free from ourselves. We are free to serve God, in whose service we find true freedom. We are free to achieve our true potential as human beings now and throughout eternity. The merciful love of Jesus gives us gospel freedom!
