Abel’s blood cried out for justice. But Jesus’ sacrifice speaks a better word. How did that one sacrifice change everything? Hebrews 12:24 has the answer.

Hebrews 12:22–24

[22] But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, [23] and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, [24] and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. (ESV)

Two Types of Blood

You know the story from Genesis 4. Abel brought an offering to God. Cain brought one too. But Abel’s was accepted, and Cain’s was rejected. Cain got angry. So angry that he killed his brother.

Genesis 4:10 says Abel’s blood cried out from the ground. It cried for avenging justice. It demanded that Cain be held accountable.

But now the writer brings up Abel’s blood again in verse 24. Not to remind us of the cry for justice, but to contrast it with something far better. “The sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”

What’s the better word? Jesus’ sacrifice.

Justice and Mercy at the Cross

Because of sin, judgment must come. All who have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, sinning against him in thought, in word, and in deed, deserve his judgment. Unable to stand as unholy ones in the presence of a holy God.

But at the cross of Christ, justice comes. The penalty is paid. Jesus, who is not only our great high priest but the sacrifice himself, took upon himself the full weight of what we deserve. That blood shed once and for all means justice has been done.

Jesus took the justice and the just judgment that we deserve. And because justice was satisfied at the cross, mercy and grace can now be extended and offered to sinners in their time of need.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that Jesus’ sacrifice speaks mercy over your life. You don’t have to live under the cry for justice. His blood doesn’t demand your punishment. It offers your freedom.

Abel’s blood cried for avenging justice. Jesus’ blood cries for mercy and forgiveness. And his sacrifice was so complete, so sufficient, that it needs never to be repeated.

Reflection

What does it mean to you that Jesus’ sacrifice was offered once and for all, and that you’ll never need another offering to be made on your behalf?
