Everything shakes. Kingdoms fall. Empires crumble. But Hebrews 12:25-29 reveals what survives the shaking, how to grip what cannot be shaken, and how to earthquake-proof your soul.

Hebrews 12:25–29

[25] See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. [26] At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” [27] This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. [28] Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, [29] for our God is a consuming fire. (ESV)

A Voice That Shakes Mountains

Jesus is speaking. From heaven. To his church. And the warning is sharp. Verse 25 says, “See that you do not refuse him who is speaking.”

Don’t ignore his voice. Don’t refuse what he is saying.

The logic is simple but serious. If Israel didn’t escape when they refused God’s voice on earth, how much more serious is it to refuse him now that he speaks from heaven? There were consequences then. There are greater consequences now.

His voice once shook the earth at Sinai (v26). But there’s a greater shaking coming. In verse 27, we see that the shaking will remove everything that can be shaken. Created things. Physical things. They won’t last.

What remains? The kingdom that cannot be shaken. And the people who belong to it.

Be Careful What You Cling To

So be careful what you cling to. Don’t grip the things that are passing away. Grip Christ. Grip his word.

The scriptures, Old Testament and New, are the ongoing speaking of Christ to his church. We don’t need to seek any extra-biblical revelation. The word we’ve got in Christ, in Scripture, is complete and sufficient. We are to be a people of the word. We hear the word in our assemblies whenever we gather for worship. We hear the word in our home groups. We hear the word in our families. We hear the word in our daily lives. We must hear the word.

But more than hearing, we must heed the word. We gather together, we talk about the Bible, not just to fill our heads with more information and more knowledge, but so that that information and knowledge of God would lead to transformation.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that you can cling to something that will never shake. Jesus is better. Because Jesus not only died in our place and for our sin, but rose from the dead, he is the everlasting King! And his kingdom? His kingdom is unshakeable. His word is final and sufficient.

When everything around you trembles, you are safe in him; your soul is safe forever. Not because the world won’t shake, but because you belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Reflection

Heavenly Father, thank you that we don’t have to fear the shakings of this world because we belong to an unshakeable kingdom through Christ. Help us to grip him and his word above all else, and to gather as your people with reverence and awe for who you are. In the name of the Everlasting King, we pray, Amen.
