Jesus is Faithful Like Moses – Hebrews 3:1–2

We began yesterday, seeing the big idea of Hebrews 3:1–6: Jesus is better than Moses. And we were given two big challenges: to consider Jesus and to cling to Jesus.
Today, let’s slow down on those opening verses and see how Jesus is faithful like Moses.

The Faithfulness of Moses
[1] Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, [2] who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. (ESV)
Before the writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is greater, he wants us to see what Moses got right. Moses was faithful in the work God gave him. Faithful in leading God’s people. Faithful as God’s servant. Jewish Christians in the first century would have known this. Moses was a big deal.
The Faithfulness of Jesus
But Jesus is faithful, too. Faithful in the mission His Father gave Him. Faithful as the Apostle – the One sent from God. Faithful as the High Priest who intercedes for us. Faithful in every thought, every word, every deed.
Where Moses failed, Jesus never failed. Where Moses needed forgiveness, Jesus never needed forgiveness. Where Moses served as part of God’s house, Jesus serves as the Son over the house.
This matters for us because faithfulness is what we need in a world of distraction. Faithfulness to keep walking with God. Faithfulness to keep trusting Jesus. Faithfulness in the ordinary, everyday rhythms of life.
Faithful For Us
Here’s the difference that changes everything: while Moses was faithful, he still needed forgiveness. He still needed the very sacrificial system he helped to set up.
But Jesus? His faithfulness is perfect. His thoughts were always in alignment with His Father. His words were always in alignment with His Father. His deeds were always in alignment with His Father.
That’s why He could offer the once-for-all sacrifice. Not for His own sin, He had none, but for ours. His flawless faithfulness was for us.
So when you feel your own faithfulness faltering, and it will, remember that Jesus has been faithful for you. And that means you can trust Him. Trust Him with your past. Trust Him with your present. Trust Him with your future.
So today, lift your eyes from the noise and distraction and fix them on Jesus, the faithful one — the Apostle and High Priest of our confession.
Reflection
Lord, thank you that where I am often unfaithful, Jesus is always faithful. Help me to trust Him today.
