JESUS IS… The Good Shepherd — John 10:1-18 | Sunday Sermon with Dave Miers

Aug 30, 2026 22

Jesus’s declaration “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11) lands in the aftermath of John 9, where the Pharisees, the so-called shepherds of Israel, have just cast out a man Jesus healed of blindness. Ezekiel 34 forms the backdrop: God’s promise to come himself as shepherd, and to send a Davidic shepherd-king. In Jesus, both promises collapse into one person. He’s the God who came, the Shepherd God sent.

Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise asks the question every human eventually asks: Who’s got your back? Jesus answers it in two ways. He knows your name, with the same intimate knowing the Father has of the Son. And he rescues you. The Shepherd becomes a sheep, the Lamb of God who lays down his life and takes it up again. The good shepherd stands between his sheep and the wolf, willingly dies in their place, and rises to lead his flock through the deepest valley.
