What if angels were actually present at your church service this weekend? Hebrews 12 says they are. You’ve come to Mount Zion, where innumerable angels are in permanent celebration.

Hebrews 12:22–24

[22] But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, [23] and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, [24] and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. (ESV)

You’ve Come to a Celebration

Yesterday we saw Mount Sinai… terrifying, untouchable, a place where unholy people shudder. But notice the contrast now in verse 22, “But you have come to Mount Zion…”

This is not a mountain of fear, rather it’s a city, THE heavenly Jerusalem. And it’s not empty or solemn. It’s a celebration. Notice some of the attendees, “innumerable angels in festal gathering” (v22).

Do you know what a festal gathering is? It’s a feast. A festival. Permanent celebration mode. It’s a bit like Christmas lunch all day, every day, without ever feeling sick from eating too much! That’s the picture. Angels in endless celebration.

Why are they celebrating? Because Jesus won. Because his victory over sin and death is eternally secure. Jesus lived a perfect life on our behalf, died a sacrificial death in our place, and rose triumphantly, securing access to the presence of God for all who believe in him.

David Peterson notes this about the scene, “Angels celebrate the victory of Jesus […] and share the joy that he has entered into. By implication, God’s people on earth may join them in this praise, anticipating the joy of the heavenly city.” They’re not just spectators. They’re actively rejoicing in what Christ has accomplished.

But we’re not just watching this from afar. Remember in verse 22, “But you have come…” If you’re in Christ, you’re already enrolled as a citizen of this heavenly city (v23). You’re part of this assembly right now. Not one day. Today.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that when you gather with other believers each weekend, you’re not just in a room with a few people. Spiritually, you are joining with innumerable angels in their endless celebration of Christ!

The invisible church is far bigger and far more joyful than what we see around us in our churches. We may not always feel like it, but our gatherings should, in some way, have an element of feasting and celebration as we anticipate physically being part of that heavenly gathering when Christ returns.

Reflection

When you sit in church this weekend surrounded by other believers, what would it change about your worship to remember that angels are there too, celebrating with you?
