Why is there still sin and suffering in the world if Satan has been legally cast out (John 12:31) and Christ has won the victory at the Cross? If you can see reality as the New Testament you will have the answer to that question. So here it is!
The New Testament quotes so very extensively from the Old, reinterpreting Psalms, prophecies, and other passages with their ultimate meaning – focusing on Christ the Messiah.
And the passage from the Old Testament that is most often cited in the New is Psalm 110, verse 1 specifically, and the whole Psalm generally. Although I recommend you read the whole Psalm – it is a short one – here are the first two verses:
The Lord says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”
The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of your enemies!” – Psalm 110:1–2, NIV.
The apostolic church saw this Psalm as referring to the risen, ascended Christ, the Divine Messiah, and the Kingdom that He had firmly established in this world at the Cross. They understood that they were living in the time of the “until” – the time during which Christ is sitting at the right hand of the Father, waiting until the time when His kingdom will physically overthrow all of the kingdoms of this world.
Notice three things about the reality of this world-view:
- Christ sits at the right hand of power. However the circumstances may seem, all power is His hand. He has already won the victory. Jesus reigns!
- The Kingdom of God is already established on this earth, although not yet manifested in its fullness. Christ still rules “in the midst of His enemies.” So we should expect to see Christ’s enemies active in this world.
- God’s people look forward to the time soon when Christ’s enemies will all be completely overthrown.
Until that time, we are living in the “until.” We keep our eyes on Jesus who has gone before us, who has won the victory on our behalf, and who rules over all. That reality is transformative for how we see ourselves, for our relationships, and how we relate to the world around us.
We announce this wherever we go – that’s the Gospel! And we wait until the time when all of Christ’s enemies will finally be under his feet, and we see Him come in power and glory.
