Naked Before God – Eliezer Gonzalez

stephen-harper-naked-cartoonWho told you that you were naked? (Gen 3:11a) – This is question that the Lord God asked our first parents in the Garden of Eden. One of our greatest fears as human beings is to be discovered naked. Some people even have nightmares about being caught out naked. Those who say that there is a psychological meaning to these dreams say that they represent feelings of being vulnerable or exposed, and a fear of having an aspect of your life totally exposed. Biblically, they are not far off the mark.

The question that God asks Adam and Eve is a revealing one. God is asking them to reflect on the source of their awareness of their nakedness. The implication is that it wasn’t He (God) who had told them that they were naked. The implication is that no-one told them.

So how did they know? God’s rhetorical question had an evident and significant answer. No one had told them that they were naked, but that a change had occurred within themselves. They had done something, and as a result they felt ashamed and guilty.

And because God knows all things, they were “naked” before God – and they knew it.

Yes, something changed within humanity when sin came into the world. Sin didn’t just come into the world; it came into humanity.

We are all naked before God. It doesn’t matter how much we spend on clothes and how long we spend looking good every morning before we head out the door – whether we know it or not we are all naked before God.

For many, this sense of nakedness is simply reflected in a yearning for something more – for identity – for permanence. Others who know of God know this restlessness for what it is – the presence of sin – and a need for the presence of God.

The Apostle Paul gives us the solution when he says,

for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (Gal 3:27)

What was lost by our first parents has been regained by Christ. That spotless righteousness, pristine purity, and absolute perfection exists only in him.

If you have accepted Christ through faith, then you have clothed ourselves with him, and you will never be ashamed.
