Hebrews 2:12–13 (ESV)
“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
These verses are a collection of Old Testament quotes — Psalm 22 and Isaiah 8. The preacher of Hebrews uses them to show that Jesus himself is glad to stand with us as family.

Psalm 22 is especially powerful. It’s the psalm Jesus cried from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” That psalm describes the agony of crucifixion, the mocking, the casting of lots, the shame. But it doesn’t end there. It moves to praise and vindication: “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
The point? Out of suffering and shame comes joy and family. Jesus went to the cross in deep humiliation, but now he sings over us in victory. He is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters.
And Isaiah 8 adds the same note: “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Jesus identifies with us. He doesn’t keep us at arm’s length. He draws us close and calls us his own.
That’s incredible when you think about shame. Some of us know what it’s like to feel rejected by family, or to carry deep wounds from people who should have stood by us but didn’t. Others know what it’s like to be defined by shame — to feel like if people really knew us, they’d turn away.
But Jesus is not ashamed of you. He knows the worst about you, and still, he claims you. He knows your failures, and still he names you as his brother, his sister. He knows the shame that has been forced on you, and he says: You belong to me.
That’s the good news of the gospel. Jesus gladly identifies with us. He went through shame at the cross to remove our shame forever.
Reflection
Others may reject you. You may even feel ashamed of yourself. But Jesus is not ashamed of you. He calls you his brother, his sister, and he delights to sing over you.
