Seeds on Rocky Soil – by Ritchie Way

download“Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn’t very deep. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have enough roots.” [Jesus later explained], “The seeds that fell on the rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away, but they don’t have deep roots, and they don’t last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.”  (Matthew 13:5-6; 20-21).

This part of Jesus’ parable about the sower applies to people who accept the message with great joy.  But because they didn’t become deeply rooted in the truth, as soon as the going got tough for them they threw in the towel. Unfortunately, there are many people in that category. The fact that such people accept the message with “great joy” seems to imply that they are inclined to rush into things without first gaining good footing.

Good counsel for people like this is that they adopt the characteristics of the Bereans. They searched the Scriptures daily to ensure that what the apostle Paul had taught them was correct (Acts 17:10).  It wasn’t that they necessarily doubted his word,  but rather they wanted their faith to be their own experience, not just handed to them to follow blindly.

Similarly, we can learn and believe when we hear the Word of God, but examining the scriptures and forming a relationship with Jesus that is independent of our parents, grandparents, or even our local pastor will help us deepen our own roots, and our faith will not be fleeting.

Be a Berean and ensure that your faith is firmly founded in the Lord Jesus. Anchored firmly to the rock, Christ Jesus, you can rest in the full assurance of his salvation.
