A Spirit-Filled Community — Acts 2:42–47

What happened after three thousand people responded to Peter’s message? They became part of a Spirit-filled community. Those who called upon the name of Jesus began sharing a new life together.
Acts 2:42–47
[42] And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (ESV)
Learning, loving, worshipping and witnessing
These new believers had heard that Jesus was crucified, raised from the dead and exalted as Lord and Christ. They repented, were baptised, and received the promised Holy Spirit.
Now look at their life together. They devoted themselves.
It was daily.
It was deliberate.
It was a priority.
John Stott describes this Spirit-filled community as a learning, loving, worshipping and witnessing church.
They were a learning church, anchored in the apostles’ teaching. These were the witnesses Jesus had appointed to make him known. The new believers gave themselves to learning from them.
They were a loving church, deeply committed to one another. Their fellowship included sharing possessions and meeting practical needs. They cared for each other at a cost to themselves.
They were a worshipping church, breaking bread and praying together. They gathered with glad and generous hearts, praising God.
And they were a witnessing church. The Lord continued adding to their number those who were being saved.

A Spirit-filled community today
We should not expect every detail of life in Jerusalem to be reproduced in our churches today. Yet this picture of a Spirit-filled community, centred on Jesus and committed to his mission, is one to long for.
Don’t you long to be part of
…a learning church, hungry for God’s word?
…a loving church, committed to sacrificial fellowship?
…a worshipping church, gathering with glad and generous hearts?
…a witnessing church, where others are finding life in Jesus?
This is what happens when people call upon the name of the Lord. They become part of a new community.
The Good News is…
The Jesus who died for our sins and rose again brings those he saves into the life of his people. He gives us his Spirit and draws us together around himself. If you belong to Jesus, give yourself to the community of his people. Together, we can keep learning his word, loving one another, worshipping him and making him known.
