When I was a child, I liked to cut a length from a wire clothes hanger, and carefully make a loop on one end, with a handle on the other. Then I would get some dishwashing detergent and mix it in some water. Then I would go out and sit at the back of our house and blow bubbles in the sun.
I was amazed at how those bubbles held together and floated all around me. And I was amazed at how easily they burst when I touched them with my finger.
Those bubbles are like fear. Like bubbles, fear emerges out of nowhere and grows before our eyes. Like bubbles, they float everywhere around us. But there is something that easily bursts the bubbles of fear – the love of God.
The apostle John was a very old man. For some people, their fears increase as they grew older. But not for John. As he grew older he grew less fearful as he learnt more about the goodness and the power of the love God. And so the apostle wrote:
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them… There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. – 1 John 4:16,18, NIV.
Fear, even well-founded fear in an earthly sense, is a psychological phenomenon that is driven out when we know the love that God has for us, and we rely on it.
Our fears often come from wrong things that we have learnt about life. For many people, their fears about God and how God sees them and treats them come from wrong ideas that they have learnt about what God is like.
If fear is ruling in your life, remember that God knows how to deal with your fears, by showering you in his love. Believe it. Rely on it. Because the love of God destroys fear on contact, just like the strongest soap bubbles could never withstand my finger.
Love makes fear evaporate. Love is the finger of God.
