Unlimited: Christ Became a Servant

For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy (Romans 15:8).

The reason why we are to accept one another is because Christ became a servant of the Jews. To appreciate this, we must understand that it was the Jews and the Judaising Christians who were troubling the church with their demands for the observances of the ritual and food laws.

However, Paul is saying that Christ, for the sake of the truth of God, became the servant of Jews. In fact, he goes on to point out that it is because Jesus became a servant of the Jews that they, the Gentiles, have received God’s mercy. Paul is making a powerful argument.

We are to accept one another because Christ became a servant of the Jews.

In this statement by the apostle Paul, he brings together, within the context of his argument of the last few chapters, the two great purposes of Jesus’ coming. Jesus came to fulfil God’s covenant promises that he had made with the Jewish people. Jesus also came so that the Gentiles may be included, together with the Jews, in that same covenant. Paul is referring to what Christ achieved, when he wrote to the church at Ephesus that:

His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace (Eph. 2:15.)

Christ’s servanthood was devoted to mercy (Rom. 15:8) and peace (Eph. 2:15), and we are called to do the same.
