Unlimited: God is Not Unjust
Mar 13, 2023 764
What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! (Romans 9:14)
Paul raises the question of whether God is unjust in response to the statement that he has just made that God loved Jacob but “hated” Esau. After such a strong statement, this is a very reasonable question.
In fact, Paul, and the entire revelation of God, is at pains to uphold the righteousness and the justice of God. In Romans 3:3–4:
What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:
“So that you may be proved right when you speak
and prevail when you judge.”
We are the unfaithful and unjust ones, and God will be revealed to be right and just.
We are the unfaithful and unjust ones, and God will be revealed to be right and just. The apostle John saw those who had been victorious standing in heaven, singing,
Great and marvelous are your deeds,
Lord God Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
King of the nations
… for your righteous acts have been revealed (Rev. 15:3–4.)
While we cannot know the heart of man, God is the one who weighs the heart (Prov. 21:2). One day more will be revealed to us of the reasons for God’s judgments. Until then, God has given us more than enough reasons to simply trust him.
