Unlimited: I Will Take Away Their Sins

As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins” (Romans 11:26a–27).

Paul has just written, “in this way all Israel will be saved.” In what way will all Israel be saved? This was a key question for Paul, since Israel had, through their ruling council, rejected Jesus the Messiah.

To answer this question, the apostle selects portions to quote from Isa. 59:20–21; Isa. 27:9; and Jer. 31:33-34. In this way, he shows us clearly how “all Israel will be saved.”

No matter who you are or your background, God will take away your sin if you repent.

Because he was a learned Pharisee, Paul knew these passages back to front, and inside-out. He was specifically applying these passages to the salvation of Israel. The key passage from which Paul is quoting here is Isa. 59:20:

“The Redeemer will come to Zion,  to those in Jacob who repent of their sins,” declares the Lord. 21 “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord…. (Isa. 59:20–21.)

Did you notice to whom the Redeemer will come? “To those in Jacob who repent of their sins.” Did you notice with whom the Lord will keep his covenant? “To those in Jacob who repent of their sins.” This is the Lord’s covenant with Israel.

We see again that Paul does not conceive of the salvation of every genetic or national Jew, but only, as with the Gentiles, those who repent.

Spiritual Application

God’s promise is still the same. No matter who you are or your background, he will take away your sin if you repent. Ask him anew to search your heart and reveal to you any wrongdoing, that you may surrender it to him.
