Unlimited: On My Way to Jerusalem

Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem in the service of the Lord’s people there (Romans 15:25).

When he wrote the letter to the church at Rome, the apostle Paul was on his way to Jerusalem to serve the church there. It was to be his final journey as a free man. Everything Paul did was to serve the Lord’s people.

While we are still breathing, each one of us is on our way to somewhere. Paul’s journey wasn’t going to end up quite the way that he expected, just as it might not do so for us. The important thing is that we be on our way in the service of the Lord. As Jesus taught,

Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me (Matt. 25:40, NIV.)

For Paul, Jerusalem represented an uncertain future, and he prayed much about it.

Paul also took seriously the words of the Lord Jesus when he said,

…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43–45.)

Eventually, Paul would also lay down his life as a servant of the Lord. As he had lived, so he would die.

Spiritual Application

Paul was on his way to Jerusalem. For Paul, Jerusalem represented an uncertain future, and he prayed much about it. Are you on your way to your “Jerusalem?” Are you on your way to a future that may be difficult, or even dangerous? What can you learn from Paul about how to face “Jerusalem?”
