Unlimited: One Mind and One Voice

so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 15:6).

Here, the apostle Paul is referring to the agreement of our “mind” and our “voice.” Our internal and external realities must agree. This reminds us of what Paul told us in Rom. 10:9:

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9.)

In Romans 15:6, Paul is also concerned that followers of Jesus should not be double-minded. This means that they shouldn’t be conflicted between two different purposes or worldviews. They should be entirely committed to Christ. The apostle James tells us that,

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways (James 1:8, KJV.)

Are your “mind” and your “voice” one?

If being double-minded is a sickness of the inner person, then its symptom is instability. It is to be,

Like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind (James 1:6, NIV.)

James reminds us that to be double-minded indicates impurity within our heart:

…purify your hearts, you double-minded (James 4:8b.)

Jesus was referring to one important example of such impurity when he taught,

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money (Matt. 6:24.)

Spiritual Application

In the reality of your life, are your “mind” and your “voice” one? Are they consistent? Are you free to be same with others, as you are within yourself?
