Unlimited: Sin or Obedience?
Oct 25, 2022 857
whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16b).
What Paul is telling us here is that every person on earth is in reality a slave. The fact that we have freedom of choice doesn’t mean that we aren’t slaves. When we use our free will to choose to obey someone or something we are their slave.
From a cosmic viewpoint, the powers of good and evil are far more powerful than we are. If we are not obedient to God, then whatever our choices may be and however free we may feel, our lives will be under the control of the power of evil. We will be its slaves.
The only way to be freed from the power of evil is to choose to serve God, which means to be a slave of God. Then our lives will be under his control.
You can either be a slave to sin or obedience.
These are the only two choices that Paul gives us here. We can either be slaves to sin, which means that we will die in the end, or we can be a slave to obedience (to God) which will lead to righteousness.
This fundamental choice will always be reflected in the tendency of our lives: either this will tend toward sin and death, or to lives that tend toward obedience and righteousness. And as Paul has told us previously, the righteous will live (Rom 1:17).
