Unlimited: Teach Yourself

you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? (Rom. 2:21a.)

Paul is following the teachings of Jesus in emphasising the dangers of hypocrisy.

Jesus had lamented the hypocrisy of those who merely followed the forms of external worship. He said to them,

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain…
(Matt. 15:7–9.)

Jesus also spoke of the hypocrites who look

at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? (Matt. 7:3)

If we teach others about God, we must also ensure that we sincerely allow ourselves to be taught by God.

What is the result of hypocrisy? Jesus said,

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are. 16 “Woe to you, blind guides! (Matt. 23:14–16.)

Teaching others spiritual things is a tremendous responsibility with eternal consequences for both yourself and those you may teach. If we teach others about God, we must also ensure that we sincerely allow ourselves to be taught by God.

Spiritual Application

On a scale of 0 to 10, with ten being the most teachable, how would you rate yourself on your teachability by God? Reflect and pray on this.
