Unlimited: We Wait Patiently

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently (Romans 8:25).

Patient waiting is a key quality of God’s sons and daughters in this world. In Paul’s context here, he is referring to waiting patiently for the visible establishment of his kingdom.

This was the lesson of Christ’s parable of the ten young ladies who were waiting for the bridegroom to come (Matt. 25:1–13.). Five of them weren’t prepared to wait patiently. When Jesus gave the disciples the signs of the end of the age and of his coming, he told them that,

the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved (Mat. 24:13, NASB.)

Wait patiently for the visible establishment of God’s kingdom.

It is easy to think that this patient waiting is passive and inactive, and consists merely in “putting up with things.” But that isn’t the Biblical idea of patience at all. Instead, the Bible teaches us “patience in well doing” (Rom. 2:7, RSV.) Jesus taught,

Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns (Matthew 24:45–46.)

We are to be patient in doing the works of Christ (John 14:12.) As he said to Peter by the lake,

Feed my sheep (John 21:17.)

Spiritual Application

Are you good at waiting? Do you just “put up with things” or are you being “patient in well doing?”
