John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (ESV)
This is a massive claim from Jesus!
Amid all of the religions and world views and philosophies on how to live, Jesus says he is the only way that you can know God and be known by God and share in a right relationship with him for eternity. Huge claim!
But Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
In what way is he the way? He is the one who makes the way open that we can return back to relationship with our Father in heaven. Jesus is actually, at this point in John 14, on his way to the cross where he, the sinless one, will lay down his life for us, securing us a place in the Father’s house.
Second, he is the truth. Now, he is the truth in that he is (John 1) the eternal Word of God who became flesh. Of all the words out there that are competing for your attention, you can trust this one. This is the eternal Word of God that has no beginning and has no end.
And third, he is the life. In John 11, Jesus describes himself as the resurrection and the life within himself. He is life. You can’t understand life apart from Jesus. And more than that, he is resurrection life that, through trusting and believing in him, we take hold of not just life here and now, but a raised life forever with our Father in heaven.
There’s an invitation at the start of John 14 to believe in Jesus. Friends, if you’re not believing in Jesus, hear clearly from Jesus that he is the only way that you can find eternal life and relationship with the God who loves you. Let me urge you to turn to Christ and believe in him today.
