“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15).
When a plague of deadly snakes killed many people in the desert, God instructed Moses to make a snake of bronze and put it high up on a pole. When people were bitten, they had only to look at the bronze snake, and they were healed. God didn’t take away the snakes, but he provided a way for the people to be saved.
It’s interesting that God instructed Moses to make a bronze image of the very thing that brought death to the people – a snake. So it was on the Cross. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” On the Cross, Jesus became sin itself because he took all the sin of the world onto himself.
So it was that the bronze snake that healed people in the desert pointed to Jesus who became sin for us on the Cross. He took our death so that we, who had been poisoned by the venom of sin, could live through faith in him. Look unto Jesus! He alone is the source of eternal life.
