It’s in the Walk

There’s a saying that it’s not the destination that counts, but the journey. This is true of the Christian walk. If your journey is right, then you will reach the right destination. Too many people focus so much on the destination that they lose their way along their walk. But God invites us to focus on the walk.

It was because Enoch walked with God that he was taken by God. God invited Abraham to leave Ur of the Chaldees and to go on a long walk with him. He invited Joseph to go on a walk to Egypt. God asked Moses to walk for forty years in the wilderness with sheep, and then another forty with the Children of Israel.

In John 1:37–39, when two of John the Baptist’s disciples asked Jesus, “Where are you staying?” Jesus replied, “Come and see.” He didn’t want to show off his accommodation; that was not the point. He wanted them to walk with him. When Jesus invited men and women to follow him, he didn’t invite them to a destination, he invited them to a journey; Jesus said to them, “Follow me.”

They say that there are people who are so heavenly minded that they aren’t of much earthly good. To be heavenly minded is good, but only if this turns our focus on our walk with God.

What is a walk? It is a journeying through the joys and sadnesses of life, knowing that Christ is by your side. It is the opportunity to observe Christ in all our circumstances. It is listening to Jesus; it a life-long conversation with the Lord. It is following where he leads, knowing that he brings us to each place for a purpose. It is the slow and patient learning of spiritual things, and the quiet deepening of our love for Christ.

It is on the walk that we learn grace. It is on the walk that we learn submission and obedience.

The one who walks with the Lord need not rush heaven, for to walk with him is heaven itself.
