“What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matt. 8:27)
You’ve heard of storm chasers, haven’t you? They are the people who instead of running away from massive storms, jump in a vehicle and drive towards them!
Jesus Christ is the ultimate Storm Chaser. It is interesting that Jesus never avoided the storms.
He was born into a social and political storm, with soldiers soon sent to hunt him down and try to kill him. He stood up in the synagogue, read a prophecy about the coming Messiah, and basically announced that he was the fulfillment of that prophecy. He stood up in a solemn ceremony in the temple in Jerusalem and cried out that he was the only one who could give salvation. He claimed to be a king when such a claim was sure to get you killed. He spent time and actively worked on behalf of those who were outcasts from society for moral, racial, religious, and gender reasons.
This is not the popular image of Christ as some kind of meek and mild yellow-livered, quivering blob of tenderhearted jelly. However, Christ never sought out controversy for his own sake, but for the sake of the lost, the downtrodden, and the oppressed.
Do you remember how while the disciples screamed in terror in the midst of the violence of nature, our Lord walked with the waves under his feet, and how with his voice stilled the storm? That’s the Lord whom we serve! But that’s not all…
Christ died in the midst of a storm. It was not only a political and religious storm. Sure, there was darkness and an earthquake, but it was not only a natural storm, either.
It was the greatest storm that was ever raged, between good and evil, love and hate. The devil was out to claim you for his own and condemn you to misery and death. But Jesus was out to forgive your sin and give you his perfect life so that you might be saved forever. That was what Calvary was all about. It was the eye of the storm for your soul – and Jesus won!
When you feel like you are in the eye of the storm, remember that our Lord is the ultimate storm chaser! There’s no storm that he cannot handle because he has already handled death and resurrection for you.
If you are facing a storm in your life right now, remember that Jesus knows how to weather the very worst storms that life can ever throw at you.
You are not alone.
