… then choose for yourselves today whom you will serve … But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15).
As soon as King Herod learned from his advisors that the Messiah was to be born in his territory, “he called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star appeared to them.” He needed to know this in order to calculate, from the length of time it took them to travel by camel train, from Babylon in the east to Israel in the west. This would give him a good estimate of how old the child would be. They indicated that the whole journey, including stops at various places, took them about two years (Matthew 2:7-12).
Herod, jealous of his position as ruler over Israel, was not about to let some new-born baby king usurp his throne.
There are two rulers in our world: Satan and Christ. Satan is the ruler of the whole earth. Like Herod he will fight to retain his crown. Jesus, however, reigns only in the hearts of those who accept him as their Lord and Saviour. If your heart is open to his presence he will come in and reign there as king of your life. And if you have Jesus, you have eternal life (1 John 5:11-12). Eternal life is possessed by all who have Jesus. They rest in the assurance that heaven is their home, both now and in the future; they do not worry whether or not they will go to heaven, for the peace that passes all understanding fills them to the brim.
